So Sam and I saw the Sex and the City movie last night, and it was extremely worth it. If you're a fan of the show. I have to say that I can't believe it'd be enjoyable for someone who doesn't know anything about the show or the characters. Since I'm such a fan, it was pretty much heaven. I was shocked a bit by the audience. First of all, people dressed UP. I mean, slinky satin numbers, too-tall heels and wedges, shiny purses, the whole nine yards. Sam kept saying it was like Star Wars for girls. Everyone gets dressed up like the film. Secondly, everyone was so young! I think the audience was probably a majority of girls under 25. And keep in mind, this is a movie about women in their 40's. I'm not saying that's bad, but it is slightly odd. And lastly, there were maybe 20 men in the 460 seat auditorium. (The showing didn't sell out, but that's only because the theater we saw it at added two screenings yesterday.) For the first 30 min or so in the aud., I literally counted the men coming in, and there were 7, including Sam. I've never been at a movie with such a lopsided audience. The whole movie theater was taken over by women, actually.
Anyway, I do have some thoughts about it, but they're SPOILER-ific, so if you're going to see the movie, PLEASE please don't read beyond the jump.

- I LOVED Jennifer Hudson in this movie. I think that her place in Carrie's life (as Carrie's assistant Louise) was perfect. And as a character, she was just lovable.
- I'm not really happy with where the film took Samantha. Sam said the same thing. I wasn't happy that she left Smith. I liked Smith. Smith shaved his head. Remember that? I understand what the writers were going for, but it sucked.
- I thought Michael Patrick King did an amazing job of keeping the audience guessing. Every time I was SURE I knew where the movie was going, I was right. But how the movie got there ended up being a COMPLETE surprise. And I was a little surprised at the ending, I'll be honest. It was delightful, don't get me wrong, but I didn't see it going there. Every time I plotted a scene out in my head, sure I knew how SATC worked, I was wrong. That was quite nice.
- The trailers DIDN'T give too much away. Quite the opposite, in fact.
- I was pretty saddened by the way the men were used, in general. Very little on-screen time for Harry, Smith and Steve. And poor Steve was the enemy when he was on-screen.
- I wasn't happy with Charlotte's pregnancy. It (again, as so often) made a mockery of the realistic portrayal of infertility that the show had really worked at achieving.
- The fashion was serious eye-candy. I'm not the biggest fashion follower in the world, but in this context, it's just fun. There's a pair of shoes that Samantha wore in one of the biggest scenes for her that were just perfect--sparkly fish bones in a scene centered around sushi. Marvelous.
