Lately, I've just been obsessed with Kevin Smith. If you take note of Sam's and my film consumption through Netflix, you'll know that we just ripped through both "Evening With..." DVDs. What you don't know about is the sheer volume of other Kevin Smith media I've partaken of in the last two months or so: both of his books, careful exploration of the website and message boards, some of his podcasts (with more to listen to in the next few weeks), repeated viewings of his films when I can catch them (including Catch and Release) and then anything else that I can find about him. I can't tell you why I'm so fascinated all of a sudden except that in some way, his sense of humor dovetails with my own, and I find everything he utters nearly hysterical. Even disgusting humor--sex and shit, essentially--is funny to me when Kevin Smith is involved.
I've never been a crazy Kevin Smith fanboy. I've always mildly enjoyed his films, especially Chasing Amy and Jersey Girl. Okay, I'll come clean. I adore Jersey Girl and have since the first viewing of it. When I was reading Smith's journal book (My Boring-Ass Life), a student came up to the Circ desk and said, "Oh, you like Kevin Smith. What's your favorite of his?" and I thought he was going to die of shock when I said "Jersey Girl, actually." I guess I like the fact that his movies are funny, but at the end, there's still this huge beating heart of a film left. That's exactly my cup of tea. You can tell me a joke about shit and anal sex and throw in some Star Wars worship for good measure if you give me a love story along with it. Just don't give me the shit and the anal sex and that crap without anything to catch me (Superbad, what???) where it matters. Anyway, yes, I like his films. Never liked Clerks or Mallrats so much, though I always admired Dogma. And Clerks II was quite satisfying for the ratio of shit jokes to love story.
I don't think this entry has a point at all, except to say if you've seen all the movies, you might enjoy the "Evening With...." DVDs. The guy has an interesting point of view, and he says funny shit. The same goes for his podcasts. Funny shit. Interesting point of view. Can't wait for Zach and Miri, and his film Red State might actually get me to view a horror film in a theater for the first time in 10 years.
