I think S is a supertaster. I'd never heard of the concept before this weekend, but I mentioned it off-hand to him, and he ran with it. Essentially, the idea is that he would have more taste receptors on his tongue that us normal tasters. There are a few ways to test the hypothesis--one including Sweet N' Lo--and I'm sure we'll try one at some point. But a lot of the hallmarks of supertasters are present in S. He doesn't like vegetables, olives, coffee, or alcoholic beverages, all of which are super taster dislikes. I kind of thought that S didn't like vegetables because his mom cooked crappy veggies when he was a kid, but if this supertaster thing is true, veggies actually do taste bad to him, probably way more bitter than they taste to normal tasters.
Isn't that interesting? Living with S and his food preferences is always interesting, because he's so picky about food, and it's kind of a relief to learn that it's not just that he's being a big butthole about food. You know, it gets exasperating to live with someone who recoils from every green food on the planet, and it's incredibly hard to cook for that. Which is pretty much why S and I eat separate meals every night. And it's fine, it's working for us, but at least now I know why. Like I said, it's a relief.
