Dinner was marvelous. We ate at 302 West, in suburban Geneva. I really recommend it, even to you city dwellers, because it is equal to, if not better, than most of the restaurants in the city. Here's what we ate:
Appetizers
We got two: a roasted head of garlic with baked Feta, olives and crusty bread, and focaccia with prosciutto, mascarpone and tomato relish. We'd had the garlic/Feta dish before, and like last time, it was delicious. The baked Feta was nicely herbed, and the garlic was beautifully roasted. However, it was the focaccia that stole the show. The actual focaccia was herby and good, the mascarpone was superb--buttery and cheesy, less sweet than cream cheese--and the prosciutto was some of the smoothest I've ever had (and I've eaten lots of prosciutto in Italy). S seemed to especially like the prosciutto, and we both agreed that it's an appetizer we'd eat again.
Main Meals
S had a NY strip steak, with a potato haystack, hericots verts, and baby carrots, in a wine-veal stock reduction. I had Roasted Char, on a bed of asiago polenta, with asparagus tips on a bed of tomato sauce and basil oil. S loved his steak, and said it was perfectly seasoned. I had a bite, and he was right. The potatoes were lovely too, crunchy and thin. (He did eat one piece of carrot, and said it wasn't too bad.) My fish was perfect. The two sauces were in perfect harmony, and worked really well with the fish, which might have been a slight bit too fishy without it. I of course love asparagus, so that was good. I didn't love the polenta, but I liked it, and anyway, I wanted to save room for dessert.
Dessert
S had a brownie sundae. I had Tarte Tatin with apples, pears, caramel sauce and vanilla sauce. S's brownie sundae came with a scoop of vanilla gelato, and a thick coating of chocolate sauce, along with pecans. He loved it, and though I only had a small bite of the chocolate sauce with the nuts, I can agree that it was pretty damn good. It was good for S, because he wanted to have gelato, and this gave him a chance to sample a different dessert, in addition to the gelato. My Tarte Tatin was scrumptious. I ate every single bit of it, and would have licked the bitter vanilla and caramel off the plate if I could have. S had a bite, as well, and said that it was pretty damn good.
So yeah. Delicious, and worth the hype.
