It's curious. Today, I stumbled upon The Laramie Project, which of course is the after-the-fact telling of Matthew Shepard's death in Laramie, Wyoming.
At one point, a newscast (not sure if it was fake or real) was playing in the background to the action, and one phrase really jumped out at me: "gay in cowboy country". Right now, the gay cowboys we're thinking about are the fictional ones from Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain.
I'm not sure that I'm trying to make a point. I'm just saying that it's really interesting to consider the two stories, their settings, and their outcomes. I couldn't stop thinking about the latter when watching the former.
