I saw an acorn squash recipe at Simply Recipes this morning, but didn't give it a second thought, because I've never had it, and I rather doubt that I like it. However, I went to a farmstand (an long haul) this afternoon and surprise! they had acorn squash. And they were very cheap. So I bought one, and as I type this, it's in the oven.
The question is, will I like it? I'm still leaning towards no, but if you've read the recipe, you know that it's drenched in generous quanitities of butter, brown sugar and maple syrup (although, it's not too many points, actually.). And I tend to think that anything drenched in butter and sugar can taste good. I suppose it could go either way. I'll update later, after dinner, because I know you're all waiting attentively to find out.
Also, do you think the president's address to the nation will push the OC back? I suspect yes, which makes me very, very, very UNHAPPY.
Update: How did it turn out????
Oh, ewwwww. The butter and sugar almost masked the oooooginess (I'm stealing your word, Kate) that was the squash. But not enough, because after two MINISCULE bites, I had to stop and eat a tomato and tuna sandwich. Which was excellent, and made me very happy, especially after I added two dill pickles to my plate.
I will say, though, that the squash looked pretty. In fact, if I were to have a dinner party, this would make an impressive dish. It looks really beautiful, all brown and sugary. Actually, it looks so nice that I left it on the counter so that S could see it when he gets home from work. Not that he'll eat it, mind you. And I don't think he should, because it tasted so ucky. (Don't you hate when someone takes a bite of something and says, "Oh, this is disgusting. Taste it!" and thrusts a fork or spoon of something disgusting at you? I would never thrust the acorn squash at S.) I just think that he should look at it, admire it, maybe even take a picture of it, and realize that in no time at all, I'll be the next celebrity chef. If I can make acorn squash, the sky is the limit. Now if only I liked the things I cooked. (Because I'm not saying that this is bad because it's bad, but it's bad because I don't like acorn squash. An acorn squash lover might, in fact, love this dish. So I can cook, but I keep cooking things I don't like, like the time I cooked the zucchini on the grill. I hate zucchini.)
Maybe if S does take a picture of my beautiful acorn squash, I'll post that picture here, just so you all can see how talented I am at cooking pretty things. Ha.
I would love to see a picture of this!!!! I like certain Acorn Squash things but not everything. I give you props for trying it through----not many people would do that!

Squash is one of the few things i don't care for either. One time I was out to dinner with Michelle and she tasted her food and said, "I think this is spoiled. Here, taste it." Uh no...i trust your judgement on the spoiled thing.
You have to try things in order to find new things that you like.

Guilty as charged on the "It's icky - taste it" comment. I immediately recognized myself as one of those people. (Too much need for affirmation maybe?)
