I know some people who assume this is some sort of holiday, and it's nice that they think so, but I don't really think that this is a true holiday. It's an excuse to drink beer. Green, bad, light beer. I don't drink beer. I'm not Irish. Not even 1%. And I'm a mutt.
Is there an Italian holiday? Or a German one? (Then again, we're not so much in the habit of celebrating the Germans, who seem to have a predisposition for making trouble on the global level.) Actually, I think I recall that there is an Italian day like this one (maybe San Gennaro's day?) but that it's not really celebrated on a nationwide level. You'd think that an Italian holiday would be popular. Red wine, pasta and gelato? That sounds about right; better than green beer and boiled meat and potatoes. (Not that I don't like corned beef and cabbage, or boiled meat and potatoes, but in contest, pasta would win.) And you know, the Irish are nice and all--legendary drunks. But the Italians, well, who loves life more?
All I'm saying is, where's my holiday? We could have a parade (it would have to run at least an hour late) and everyone would prepare (or just eat at a restaurant) elaborate Italian-style meals--at lunch! It sounds heavenly. Or maybe I just really want to be in Italy, and I'm taking my disgruntlement (is that a word?) out on poor St. Patrick.
I'm not wearing green, though.
