Whenever I buy a new CD, my first listen invariably ends with this question: "Would T or SS like this?" I almost never think about whether S would like it, since we barely share musical taste. I'm sure that I care about SS and T's opinions because for a while, we all worked together in a musical environment, and every day was sort of a competition to see who could come up with the cool new CD.
When I moved out of music, and then subsequently left my job at the bookstore, I really stopped listening to new music. For the past year or so, I've been listening to old CD's. I call these old CDs the Top 100, even though there are more than 100 of them, but the idea is that these CDs are the ones I keep going back to time after time. Anyway, lately I've been feeling more interested in music again, and I've even made some discoveries.
I'm obsessed with a band called Arcade Fire. They're unbelievable. I want to listen to the album over and over and over again, with no break. There is one song on the album, called Neighborhood #2: Laika, that I could (and sadly, did) listen to for a whole half hour car ride. Arcade Fire is a bit of a stretch for me, since I'm not so big on Rock, so I think it's the strings. This band is just so good. Every time I listen to the album, I like it a little bit more. I didn't even like "Laika" the first time I heard it. Now, I can't get it out of my head. S listened to the album, and I think he would agree that it has a retro sound, though I can't pinpoint why.
I'm also really digging Rilo Kiley. The new album made a lot of the Best of 2004 lists, but I'm not even on that album yet. I really like the one that came before that one, called Take-offs and Landings. In fact, one of my description lines was from a song of theirs, called Pictures of Success. Rilo Kiley is very different from Arcade Fire, but some of the melodies in the Arcade Fire songs are vaguely reminiscent of Rilo Kiley. I think that the bands are possibly just very complimentary. They seem to go well together.
I'm stuck on repeat, though, with Arcade Fire. I suppose I'll get sick of it at some point. Until then, though....
