First of all, I can't even bring myself to comment on the brouhaha over the stupid "Desperate Housewives" commercial during that Monday Night Football game. What a ridiculous use of time. Like the NFL hasn't been in bed with sex since oh, it's inception. What's more American that the brutal game of football and girls in bikinis? Someone, somewhere, suggested that maybe the furor is actually over the fact that she was white, and he was black. Huh. And interesting thought, huh? Who cares if the white Coors twins bounce around? But add a black guy to the mix, and oooooh, no, sex is bad.
Also, I'm so depressed by the footage of that Marine executing someone inside a MOSQUE that I can't even think straight. It's a goddamn holy place. And people keep excusing his actions, saying that war is brutal, the seige of Fallujah has been horrifying even by the horrifying standards of war, and it creates a psychological mindset that makes it excusable. Andrew Sullivan is excusing it here. His comments made me FURIOUS. I'm glad that I'm not in Iraq too. I'm proud of the people who are going over to die for our country for no fucking reason. But I will NOT be thankful to this murdering Marine. Just because he's been psychologically demoralized and brutalized by a long campaign doesn't mean he's allowed to completely disregard humanity's laws. I think that as Americans, as fucking humans, we're so much better than that. Crossing over that line, turning into barbarians, well, that's sad. What that Marine should have done was check for his pulse, and called a medic. You're not allowed to execute at will. You kill when you might be killed, not to get your jollies off. Anyway, I'm not alone at feeling this way. Sullivan actually received a letter telling him he's being an idiot. From a former Marine, no less. Thank God some people still understand that to call yourself a human, you have to behave with humanity.
And lastly, I've found two new websites that I'm OBSESSED with. (Did I spell that right?) I know I will be looking at these websites on a daily basis, and I think you should too.
